Building a Global Nanjing Community
Cities live twice: once in their streets, and once in the memories of the people who carry them elsewhere. For those of us in the United States with ties to Nanjing — by birth, family, study, or affection — the city is not an abstraction. It is schoolyards near the city wall, plane trees over Zhongshan Road, and the particular rhythm of a place that has been a capital many times over.
The American Nanjing Society exists to keep that connection alive in both directions:
- Stories — recording the experiences of the Nanjing community in the Bay Area and beyond, before they fade.
- Knowledge — building careful, source-backed pages about the city’s people, places, and institutions, in English, for anyone curious.
- Gatherings — events that bring the community together, from lectures to neighborhood meals.
